Pablo Carreno Busta v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

Carreno Busta leads Koepfer 2-0 in their head-to-head, winning matches at the Shanghai Masters qaulfying rounds in 2019, and most recently in the Round of 16 of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Both matches were settled in straight sets.

Carreno Busta Returns After Tokyo Heroics

Even in the absence of its greatest ever player, Spain still found an unsung hero that left them leaving the Tokyo Olympics tennis tournament with a bronze medal.

Carreno Busta earned his country an unlikely podium finish with stunning victories over Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the bronze medal match.

His week in Tokyo was a further reminder that he is in the form of his life. The 30-year-old Spaniard will re-enter the world’s top-10 for the second time in the coming weeks. Since the pandemic hiatus, winning has become a regularity for Carreno Busta.

The former World No. 10 has been to US Open semifinal (albeit in bizarre circumstances), reached the quarters at Roland Garros, and won his biggest title at the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg shortly after this year’s Wimbledon.

After soaking up one of his biggest tennis accomplishments in Japan’s capital, Carreno Busta will return after a fortnight of rest and will play a man he beat en route to that historic third-place finish.

Koepfer Gets Second Bite of Cherry

Despite losing in the second round of qualifying to Marcos Giron, Dominik Koepfer landed a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser. And he took advantage of that opportunity by upstaging his countryman Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets.

Koepfer won 7-6 5-7 6-3 in just over two and half hours. He out-aced the World No. 47, hammering nine aces and winning 73% of first-serve points.

There were no breaks of serve, despite Kopefer coming under immense pressure in the first set. But he dominated the ensuing tiebreak winning it 7-2.

The next two sets featured two breaks in total, and crucially it was Koepfer who generated the decisive one in the third set to lead 4-2. And in spite of Struff’s best efforts to break back while he served for the match (trailed 15-40), the left-handed lucky loser held his nerve to secure a massive victory.

Carreno Busta v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Since he defeated a fatigued Djokovic at the end of July, Carreno Busta hasn’t played a competitive match for over two weeks.

That should certainly be good news for Dominik Koepfer who represents decent value to make things significantly difficult, contrary to what the odds suggest. Plus, Koepfer is coming off a confidence-boosting win over Struff in the opening round.
