Watson Searching for Consistency

Watson’s not been at her best this season. The Briton, ranked 62nd in the world, has an 11-16 record in 2021 across levels, with just one semifinal appearance in Birmingham, which she lost to Ons Jabeur.

A four-time champion on the tour, Watson claimed her last title in Acapulco in 2020, but since then she has struggled to get past the earlier rounds of most tournaments.

Since Birmingham, Watson made three first-round exits, which included a Round-of-64 defeat at the Olympics. She failed to qualify for the Rogers Cup, after falling to Clara Burel in the second qualifying round, but found some form in Cincinnati, qualifying for the tournament by defeating Katie Volynets and Rebecca Peterson and then winning her first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her Cincinnati run eventually ended with a straight sets defeat to Ashleigh Barty.

Interestingly all three of her victories in Ohio were gutsy, three-set wins.

Having got a few wins under her belt, she will now be hoping to build on that as she prepares for her 10th U.S. Open – the only major where she is yet to win a first-round match.

Bogdan Comes Through the Qualifiers

World No. 106 Ana Bogdan qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over Belgium’s Kimberley Zimmermann in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Bogdan, who had beaten America’s Emma Navarro 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the first qualifying round on Saturday, lost just three games against Zimmermann on her way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

A former top 60 player, the Romanian is playing in her first hard court tournament since her first-round defeat to Sasnovich in St. Petersburg in March. Most recently she played in Cluj-Napoca, winning her first round match but falling in the second.

Her best this season came in Istanbul, where she reached the quarterfinals by beating Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. Bogdan also featured in the third round at Roland Garros, but she had a free pass to the Round of 32 after Naomi Osaka withdrew from the second round contest.

Watson v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Expect this to be a close contest. The higher-ranked Watson will be the favourite, but Bogdan would pose a tough challenge. This contest may need three sets to decide the winner.
