Albert Ramos-Vinolas v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in qualification for Bastad back in 2014, the Spaniard winning in straight sets for the loss of just one game.

Ramos-Vinolas Prefers Clay

Like his opponent, Ramos-Vinolas is happier on clay than on a hard court, as evidenced by his record at the US Open – in ten previous visits he has never been further than the second round.

However, at least he has been trying to prepare by entering the pre-Grand Slam events, with only limited success so far.

He was beaten in the first round in Toronto by Marin Cilic, and then travelled to Cincinnati. Ramos-Vinolas achieved an encouraging first-round win over the American Taylor Fritz, and won the first set in his next match against Matteo Barrettini.

But the Italian world number 8 hit back strongly to win the next two.

The Spaniard was given a  first-round bye in Winston-Salem.

Ymer’s Delayed Start to Hard Court Season

The younger and the higher ranked of the two Swedish tennis playing brothers, Ymer chose to miss the first part of the American hard court season, instead remaining in Europe on clay, where he was last in action inn Kitzbuhel, where he reached the third round.

He was perhaps fortunate that his first match then was against another clay court player, the Italian Stefano Travaglia, the world 100.

The Swede began strongly, taking the first set after breaking Travaglia twice in successive service games.

But then he allowed his control of the match to slip in a scrappy second set, and he soon found himself a service break down. With Travaglia breaking him twice more, the momentum seemed to have decidedly shifted.

The start of the third set saw the first three games go against serve, by the end of which period Ymer was once again ahead. He then consolidated his position with two more breaks, and suddenly it was plain sailing from there for the rest of the match.

Ramos-Vinolas v Ymer Prediction and Tip

It has been seven years since their last meeting, and it is hard to imagine Ymer will be as outclassed this time as he was then. The Spaniard should still win though.
