Alize Cornet kickstarted her Chicago Open campaign with a 6-7(8), 6-0, 6-4 win over Ann Li. It was a three-hour affair but the Frenchwoman ultimately prevailed to mark her best result yet in the American swing.
Looking at Cornet’s overall season, there have been only two tournaments in 2021 where she made it past the second round. The first instance was the Volvo Car Open where she fell in the third round to Ons Jabeur (after defeating Elise Mertens) while the second instance was the Bett1Open where she reached the semis.
The 31-year-old, who is the current world number 68, was particularly impressive in Berlin as she defeated big guns like Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza, but ended up falling to Belinda Bencic.
Cornet is on the prowl for her first singles title since the Swiss Open 2018.

Paolini, Looking to Impress
Jasmine Paolini had a relatively easier fixture in the opening round of the Chicago Open. She defeated Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes to reach the second round.
With a win-loss tally of 19-17 and an entry into the top 100, the 25-year-old has been working hard to get some wins under her belt. While Paolini struggled in the upper-tier WTA events, she has had some success in the WTA125K Series.
In Saint-Malo, the World No. 98 was the runner-up where she lost to Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. A few weeks later in Bol, Croatia, she won the title after beating Arantxa Rus in the final. Paolini also won the doubles in Hamburg European Open with Jil Teichmann.
Cornet v Paolini Prediction and Tip
Alize Cornet has got a lot of experience on her side and having peaked at the #11 spot in the singles ranking, she should do well to deliver a deep run in Chicago. That said, the Frenchwoman has shown a tendency to succumb to lower-ranked players this season and in light of this, Paolini will more than fancy her chances of reaching the quarterfinal.
