Benoît Paire v Emil Ruusuvouri Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was in Atlanta a few weeks ago.

The match had gone into the third set, but with Paire a break down, when he was forced to retire with injury.

Paire Maintains Recent Improved Form

Paire continued his mid-season revival, after his terrible start to the year, by reaching the quarter-finals in Cincinnati last week, and he caried that form over into Winston-Salem by beating the number six seed and world number 18, Denis Shapovalov, in three sets in the first round.

That earned him a second-round tie with compatriot Gilles Simon, and he progressed with a  routine win ,despite not playing particularly well. An opponent in better form would have taken more advantage of Paire only landing 39% of first serves.

As it was Simon was struggling from the moment he lost his opening service game, and was soon a double break down. He clawed one of them back, and saved a set point, but Paire closed out the set next game.

Simon then lost his opening service game of the second set, and the writing was on the wall for the world number 103.. Paire was able to control proceedings, never once looked like he might be broken himself, and then took the match with a further break.

Ruusuvouri Enjoys American Hard Courts

Ruusuvouri is making hs debut in Winston-Salem, but, so far, has continued the form he has shown on American hard courts, both earlier in the year, and more recently.

The Finn got to the last 16 of the Miami Open, and was a semi-finalist in Atlanta.

However, having begun his week with a comfortable victory over the American Denis Kudla, he had an even better victory on Tuesday over the number five seed, Alexander Bublik.

Ruusuvouri was on the front foot almost from the start, breaking Bublik in his opening service game, and the consolidating that with another break to take the set.

The second set was more even, and Bublik had his chances to make a comeback when the seventh game saw him earn five break points. He could not take any of them, and, á few games later, found himself saving four match points.

To his credit he did so, and it headed into a tie-break, where the Finn had to more match points, the second of which he converted.

Paire v Ruusuvouri Prediction and Tip

The pair were evenly matched the last time they met a few weeks ago, and another tight contest can be expected. Paire may start the marginal favourite because of his greater experience.
