Fabio Fognini v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

Fognini and Pospisil have played each other twice, with the Canadian winning on both occasions. They last met for a round-robin fixture at the 2019 Davis Cup Finals in Spain, with Pospisil prevailing in straight sets.

Fognini Coming off Third Round Loss in Cincinnati

In the quest of a second wind after persistent injury struggles and a battle with Covid-19 last year, Fognini opened his season on an encouraging note, helping his country to his first ATP Cup final.

Though Italy finished second best to Russia in the Cup final, Fognini’s run held the promise of better returns from the Tour going forward.

Though he did seem to be living up to that early promise, finishing in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, he suffered a downturn in fortunes ever since.

After a run of unflattering results, Fognini failed to defend his 2019 title at the prestigious Monte-Carlo Masters. After another lean spell during which he failed to reach the business-end of a single Tour event, the Italian fell in the third round of the French Open, going down to Federico Delbonis of Argentina in straight sets.

He couldn’t better his Roland-Garros run at the Wimbledon Championships, falling in the third round to Russian Andrey Rublev.

The hard-court swing ahead of the US Open hasn’t gone well for him either as he failed to progress beyond the third rounds at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters.

He will open his US Open campaign against Canadian Vasek Pospisil, an opponent who is selective with events he plays these days but holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over him.

The veteran of nine career Tour titles will have to find a way past the Canadian if he is to set dreams to lifting his maiden Grand Slam title.

Pospisil Went Down to Moutet in Cincinnati Qualifiers

After an underwhelming run of results in the initial part of the season, Pospisil took an extended break in between before kicking off the US hard-court leg with an opening-round loss to German Peter Gojowczyk at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

The veteran Canadian followed it up with a third-round loss to Sebastian Korda at Washington Open and a first-round exit after going down to American Tommy Paul.

Coming into the Cincinnati Masters in the hope of better returns than he could accomplish in his previous events, Pospisil failed to clear the qualifying hurdles, losing his opening qualifier to Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

However, going into his first-round battle at the US Open against Fognini, he will have fond memories of having got his measure in both their previous head-to-head clashes.

Fognini v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

While their head-to-head history should tip this first-round battle in Pospisil’s favor, Fognini, on his day, could still prove a handful against the best of rivals.
