Elena Rybakina v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

The two players have met just once on the tour – the 2018 St. Petersburg Open. Rybakina won that match in three sets with 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(5).

Rybakina Overcomes Sasnovich

Elena Rybakina started her current US Open campaign with a clinical 6-2, 6-3 victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The number 19 seed dished out 10 aces and kept her first service win rate at 89% to see herself through to the second round.

The 22-year-old Kazakh is looking to better her previous performances in the tournament which have progressively gotten better since her first appearance in 2018. Last year, she reached as far as the second round but now, her prospects of making it further are looking decent.

While her spell in the US Open series was less than eventful – a couple of quarterfinal runs in San Jose and Cincinnati, and a first-round exit in Montreal, Rybakina’s overall pedigree should allow her to surpass Garcia in this encounter.

On the whole, the World No. 20 has had a good year – a fourth-place finish in the Olympics along with QF stint in the French Open and WTA Abu Dhabi. Rybakina rose to prominence last season when she made it to five WTA singles finals on the tour in 2020.

Garcia Starts on a Shaky Note

Former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia had to work hard to earn her first-round win at the Flushing Meadows. In a match that lasted for two hours and 45 minutes, the Frenchwoman dispatched Harriet Dart with 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2. That said, she committed as many as 47 unforced errors to Dart’s 36.

Garcia’s season so far has been the one of pure struggles as she looks to reclaim her former glory.

The 27-year-old’s highlights include a semifinal stint in the WTA Lausanne and a third-round appearance in the WTA Dubai.

As for her preparations for the final Grand Slam of the season, Garcia featured in San Jose, Montreal, Cincinnati, and Chicago. She was beaten in the early rounds in all the competitions while her best results include a second-round clash in the Western & Southern Open where she lost to Garbine Muguruza as a qualifier.
