Mertens Snatches Victory From Jaws of Defeat

Elise Mertens’ victory over Rebecca Peterson turned out to be the longest women’s match in US Open history. The clock stood at three hours, 40 minutes when the Swede planted a routine forehand long as the small pocket of supporters who stayed glued to the action went into a frenzy.

Mertens had dropped the opening set, but pinched the next two sets in a tiebreak, saving an astonishing six match points to steal victory under Peterson’s clutches.

The World No. 16’s comeback was incredible on many levels. But Peterson’s catastrophic collapse can be attributed to her passive play from the baseline. Instead of taking the initiative, the Swedish World No. 54 was happy to extend baseline exchanges expecting an error from the usually reliable Mertens.

Peterson paid a hefty price. She served for the match twice in the second set and even let slip a 5-4 lead in the tiebreak. In the third, Mertens was under immense as she had to keep up with Peterson’s holds. The Belgian snuffed a sixth match point to force a third-set tiebreak. There, she overcame a 5-3 deficit to win the next four points.

Qualifier Grammatikopoulou Sees Off Blinkova

As Elise Mertens scraped her opening round match, Valentini Grammatikopoulou eased past Anna Blinkova 6-3 6-2 in just an hour and 15 minutes

Grammatikopoulou had been playing US Open qualies since 2017. But it was this year when she managed to foster three successive wins to secure her place in the main draw. Her comeback victories over Lucia Bronzetti and Anna Kalinskaya were all the more impressive.

The World No. 234 was playing World No. 84, but at times it felt like the Greek was the higher-ranked player. Grammatikopoulou had acclimatized herself to the New York courts, having played three matches, and she was sharp from the getgo.

She broke Blinkova three times in each set, and she was largely consistent in protecting her first serve, winning 71% of first-serve points.

Mertens v Grammatikopoulou Prediction and Tip

Mertens would be keen to make quick work of the qualifier after surviving a huge scare in that opening-round match. And we are backing the Belgian to atone for her struggles in a fairly routine win.
