Hurkacz Begins With a Convincing Win

Wimbledon semifinalist and Miami Open champion Hubert Hurkacz is off to a flying start at Flushing Meadows.

The 10th seed Pole didn’t face a single break point in the match as he knocked out Belarus’ Egor Gerasimov 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 43 minutes.

Hurkacz served 14 aces and hit 38 winners, while keeping errors in check. He didn’t double fault in the entire match, and had just 12 unforced errors. The World No. 13 was brilliant on his serve, winning 86% points on first serve and 76% points on the second.

The 24-year-old, who had a brilliant first quarter, with title successes in Delray Beach and Miami, suffered a slump in the second quarter before striking form again at Wimbledon.

In the tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, Hurkacz reached the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open for the first time in his career but could only reach the third round in Cincinnati.

Seppi Wins Epic Against Fucsovics

After four hours and four minutes of engaging battle, Andreas Seppi struck an overhead winner and fell flat on the court in disbelief.

At 37, the Italian still has the tenacity to survive long, gruelling battles, and the 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (15-13) win over world No. 41 Marton Fucsovics in the first round on Tuesday testifies that.

The drama unfolded in the final set with both players having multiple match points in the tiebreak but neither willing to give up.

Down 4-6 in the tiebreak, Seppi made a monumental comeback, saving two match points to stay alive. The Hungarian had three more match points in the tiebreak, with the last one on his serve, but Seppi was equal to his task. He too needed five break points in the tiebreaker and six in all to advance to the next round.

Playing in his 65th consecutive Grand Slam and 66th in all, the World No. 89 will now be looking to equal his previous best at the U.S. Open by reaching the Round of 32. He has reached the stage thrice before but has never gone beyond.

Hurkacz v Seppi Prediction and Tip

The mentally and physically punishing first round contest will have an effect on Seppi’s body and how well he plays in the next round will depend on how quickly he recovers for the next game. Hurkacz will be much fresher after his comprehensive first-round win. Expect the Polish player to go through in straight sets.
