Oscar Otte v Denis Kudla Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 28-year old German, and the American, who is a year older.

Otte Causes First Round Upset

Otte, who is playing in his first US Open after coming through the qualifying competition, produced one of the upsets of the opening round, by knocking out the number 20 seed, and world number 23, Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, in four sets.

The first set saw the pair swap service breaks before it went to a tie-break. Both men had set points, but Sonego generally had the better of it, and finally took the set.

And the Italian looked like he was ready to press home his advantage when he broke Otte midway through the second set. But the German responded with two breaks of his own, and they were on level terms again.

Once more Otte fell a break behind in the third set, only to recover it, forcing yet another tie break. This time it was the Italian who faltered and the German found himself in the lead for the first time.

Sonego though seemed to have wrested control back when he broke the German twice at the start of the fourth set. But Otte’s response was to break back twice himself and that meant yet another tie0break.

Three dropped serves by the Italian gave the German the chance to save for the match, and he needed no second invitation.

Kudla Beats Serbian Clay Court Player

This is the third time that Kudla has reached at least the second round of his home Grand Slam, and he got his latest campaign off to winning start by beating the Serb world number 51, Laslo Djere, a man more at home on a  clay court.

It was the Serb who started the stringer, breaking Kudla in the opening game and consolidating his lead to clinch the first set.

But then the American broke Djere midway through the second set, saved a break back point, and it was all square again.

The third set went with serve until the eleventh game when Djere was broken again. He had four opportunities to break back in the next game, could not take any of them, and Kudla found himself a set up.

Serve dominated the fourth set, meaning that a tie-break was needed to decide it. Unfortunately for the Serb, he was the only one to drop serve and Kudla was able to complete the win.

Otte v Kudla Prediction and Tip

Otte is in unchartered territory in New York, and will be buoyed by his win over Sonego. But the American is an experienced campaigner and playing in home conditions. That, and the local support, should be enough for him to make the third round.
