Matteo Berrettini v Corentin Moutet Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between both players on the tour.

Berrettini Starts Strong

Number six seed Matteo Berrettini started his US Open campaign with a straight-set win over Jeremy Chardy in the opener. The match, which lasted for two and a half hours, was a slogfest to some extent as the Italian had to win two tie-breaks. He ultimately took the match 7-6(5), 7-6(7), 6-3 committing just 15 unforced errors and doling out 37 winners.

It has been a career-defining season for the 25-year-old who made it to four singles finals this year and reached his best singles ranking as World No. 8.

His achievements include winning the titles at the Serbia Open and Queen’s Club Championships, alongside settling for the runner-up crown in the Madrid Open and Wimbledon. Berrettini was also a quarterfinalist in the French Open.

While his preparation for the final major of the season didn’t go that great (third-round exit to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati), he does have a decent track record at the Flushing Meadows. A semifinalist here in 2019, he looks primed to reach at least the quarterfinals this time around.

Moutet Overcomes Travaglia

Corentin Moutet’s opening round bout in New York entailed a straight-set win over Berrettini’s compatriot Stefano Travaglia with 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3). It was an evenly matched affair to some extent but what got him through was Travaglia’s slightly higher unforced errors count in the match.

Looking at Moutet’s overall form in 2021, the 22-year-old has made it past the second round only in a handful of tournaments. The last time it happened was in April in ATP Barcelona and Estoril – back then, his run was halted in round three respectively by Diego Schwartzman and Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

A semifinalist in ATP Melbourne as well, Moutet’s entire season has been an inconsistent one, to say the least. With just two wins in his last four tournaments before the US Open, World No. 88 faces the herculean task of defeating Berrettini.

Berrettini v Moutet Prediction and Tip

This is a one-sided battle where nothing short of a straight-set win would be acceptable for a player of Berrettini’s calibre. Expect the Italian to sail comfortably into round three.
