Belinda Bencic v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

Bencic leads the head-to-head 2-0, winning matches on the grass-courts of Hertogenbosch, and most recently at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Both matches finished in straight sets.

Bencic Routs Trevisan

With Martina Trevisan in dire need of points to keep her ranking afloat, she faced one of WTA’s in-form players in Belinda Bencic. And the Swiss would show no empathy towards the Italian as she swept her aside 6-3 6-1 in 72 minutes.

The Swiss gold medalist fired 17 winners (one more than Trevisan), but it was the unforced errors count which she managed to cut down drastically over the two sets –  accumulating just eight in total. She dropped only five points behind her first serve and four on her second.

The 11th-seeded Bencic created 15 breakpoints, and in the wake of Trevisan’s charitable game, she converted five of them en route to victory.

Bencic has now won 11 of her past 12 matches, with her solitary defeat in that span coming in Cincinnati where she lost to her compatriot Jil Teichmann the eventual finalist. She has also reached the third round or better at the US Open at least five times out of six showings.

Pegula Equals Best Appearance In Home Slam

She may not have won a title in 2021 just yet, but Jessica Pegula continued to go from strength to strength and recorded her 34th win of the season with victory over Misaki Doi. And in the absences of Serena Williams and Jennifer Brady, it appears that Pegula will be leading the field of American women this fortnight.

Pegula dissected the Japanese in an hour and five minutes in a solid display of baseline aggression and power. She steamrollered through the opening set dropping just five points on serve and did not face a single breakpoint.

In the second set Doi’s level did not get any better as Pegula pummelled winners and forced the left-handed Japanese woman to hit basic errors.

Overall, the 23rd seed won 84% first-serve points. She hit 23 winners to 19 unforced and will look to earn revenge on her first-round defeat at the Tokyo Olympics when she takes on Belinda Bencic.

Bencic v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Pegula has lost 16 matches this year, and only four of those have come against lower-ranked opponents. It has taken some of the best players to stop her, and Bencic is certainly in that category. But we expect this to be a lot closer than their meeting in Tokyo, and Pegula could thrive in these surroundings.
