Elina Svitolina v Simona Halep Head to Head

It will be the 10th chapter in their rivalry. Svitolina has a 5-4 lead from their previous nine meetings. Most recently, they met thrice in 2019, with Halep winning the Doha and Wimbledon semifinals, and Svitolian winning in the group stage of the WTA Finals.

They have been involved in three three-setters so far, with Halep coming out on top on two occasions, while Svitolina won the Italian Open final in 2017 in three.

Svitolina Extends Win Streak

Elina Svitolina extended her dominance over Daria Kasatkina, registering a sixth win over the Russian in their sixth meeting and moving into the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

The victory also extended Svitolina’s current streak to eight matches, which began last week, when she went all the way to capturing her first title of the season in Chicago. A semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, Svitolina has been in sensational form this week, breezing past her first three opponents without dropping a set. What’s more, the Ukrainian has been broken just once in the first three rounds.

On Friday, Svitolina broke Kasatkina once in the first set and twice in the second to race to clinch the contest 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 14 minutes. The World No. 5 had 25 winners, one less than the Russian, but made just 14 unforced errors, six less than Kasatkina.

In the previous two rounds as well, Svitolina had kept her unforced errors in check, making just 6 of them against Rebecca Marino in the first round and 11 against Rebeka Masarova in the second round.

Her fourth round match won’t be as easy as the first three rounds and may go the distance, but Svitolina is not someone who buckles under pressure, and is prepared for long battles.

Her ability to hold nerves in close three-setters was in full display at the Olympic bronze medal match, when she trumped Elena Rybakina despite winning just one game in the first set.

Halep Edges Past Rybakina in a Thriller

After cruising past the first two opponents, Simona Halep had to battle it out against Elena Rybakina in the third round, before finally seeing off the Kazakh 7-6 (13-11), 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 25 minutes.

Three-set matches have often brought the downfall of Rybakina this season and the trend continued at the U.S. Open, with the Romanian taking charge of the third set immediately after losing serve on the very first game of the set. Halep got the break back in the second game and won the next three games as well to take a 4-1 lead. There was no coming back for the Kazakh this time around as the former No. 1 marched to a third consecutive win.

There was little to choose between the two players in the first set, with both breaking each other’s serve thrice. In the tiebreak, Halep saved three set points, before converting her seventh set point to seize the initiative. The second set had a familiar feel with both players exchanging two breaks and staying level till the sixth game. Rybakina got the most vital third break in the ninth game to go ahead 5-4 before serving out the set.

The World No. 13, who missed the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympics with a calf injury and was forced to withdraw from the Cincinnati tournament on her return due to a right thigh injury, seems to have recovered well. She began the U.S. Open campaign by defeating Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the first round and Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova in the second.

A semifinalist in 2015, Halep will be aiming to reach a first quarterfinal at the U.S. Open since 2016.

Svitolina v Halep Prediction and Tip

Svitolina has been red hot over the last two weeks and it will take same effort from Halep to end the Ukrainian’s run. This promises to be a cracking contest, which may go the distance, with Svitolina a slight favourite to advance.
