Business as Usual for Schwartzman

Continuing his quest to reach the quarterfinal once again in the US Open (and go beyond this time around), Diego Schwartzman has navigated his opening-round bouts with absolute ease here.

Starting with a straight-set win over Ricardas Berankis, the number 11 seed moved on to dispatch South African veteran Kevin Anderson with 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-4. In the third round, the Argentinean ran into Alex Molčan of Slovakia and overpowered him with 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. It was a two-hour affair where Schwartzman got the better of Molčan in every aspect, including winners, first-service win rate, and unforced errors.

With this fourth-round berth at the Flushing Meadows, World No. 14 Schwartzman has also bettered his recent results in the US Open series. In the preceding two tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, the 29-year-old couldn’t make it past the third round.

But overall, his season has been quite all right – he reached the quarterfinal in ATP Barcelona and French Open and won the title in Buenos Aires.

A Dream Debut for Zandschulp in New York

25-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands made his Grand Slam debut earlier in the season in the Australian Open. He has gotten progressively better with every major, including reaching the second round in the French Open and Wimbledon.

Now in the US Open, the world number 117 has made it as far as the fourth round, all as a qualifier. His exploits include a five-set win over Carlos Taberner in the opener, followed by a 3-1 win over the eighth seed Casper Ruud in round two. Next, he moved past Facundo Bagnis 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 to post his best singles performance on the ATP Tour yet.

Zandschulp has spent most of the 2021 season on the Challenger circuit in a bid to build some form. He won the title at Amersfoort and reached the semifinal in Meerbusch, Liberec, and Tampere of late.

Schwartzman v Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman ticks all the boxes here – experience, form, and trophies. He will start as the favourite as a result but Zandschulp has displayed all signs to be a dark horse here in the Flushing Meadows.

An upset is certainly on the cards here but the execution of it will depend on how well the Dutch performs on Sunday.
