Yulia Putintseva v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first meeting between 26-year old Putintseva, who was born in Moscow but represents Kazakhstan, and the Romanian, who is three years younger.

Putintseva Recent Winner in Budapest

Unlike most of the field in Slovenia, Putintseva has enjoyed success on the senior WTA tour.

Having lost her first two finals in St. Petersburg in 2017 and Guangzhou a year later, she lifted her first title in Nuremburg in 2019.

And, in July, she won her second the Budapest Open, beating the Ukrainian Anheline Kalinina in the final, although she would be among the first to admit that she did not have the strongest field to contend with that week in Hungary.

She would have entertained high hopes of more success at the US Open, having reached the quarter-finals there last year, the third time she had got to that stage in a Grand Slam.

But her hopes were ended at the first round stage, when she was beaten by the Estonian veteran Kaia Kanepi, despite Putintseva winning the first set.

Cristian Close to Highest World Ranking

Cristian achieved her highest ever singles ranking earlier this year, and she is not far off that level now.

The Romanian has never appeared in a senior WTA final in singles, although, with compatriot Elena-Gabriela Ruse, she was runner-up in the doubles of her home event, the Bucharest Open, two years ago.

She has though achieved a fair degree of success on the ITF tour, where she has appeared in a mixture of hard and clay court finals, winning ten of them.

Her most recent final was in France this January, where she lost to the local woman Harmony Tan.

Since getting to the second round of the Romania Open this year, she has devoted her energies to the ITF tour largely, although she fell at the final hurdle of qualifying for the US Open, beaten by Rebeka Masarova of Spain in three sets.

Subsequently she took part in a Challenger event in Germany, getting to the semi-finals before losing to the Egyptian Mayar Sherif.

Putintseva v Cristian Prediction and Tip

This should be an easy opener for the number two seed, who will be keen to put the disappointment of the US Open behind her, and get back to winning ways. With more than 100 places separating their comparative world rankings, anything other than a straightforward win against Cristian would be a major surprise.
