Pera reached a career high singles world ranking of 59 last march, but this has not been her best year on tour after a series of disappointing results.

She, though, was able to make a winning start to her campaign in Slovenia with a straight sets win over Fiona Ferro, the Frenchwoman currently ranked four places higher than her.

The pair swapped breaks, and then one more, but serving to stay in the set Ferro dropped her serve and Pera had the advantage.

Bronzetti Creates First-Round Upset

Qualifier Bronzetti, who is better known for her exploits on clay than her proficiency on a hard court caused a minor upset on Tuesday by beating the world number 80, and seventh seed, Rebecca Peterson of Sweden.

Bronzetti began well, breaking the Swede in her opening service game, and although Peterson recovered the break, she was only on level terms for a brief moment before she again found herself behind.

The pair swapped breaks, but, serving to stay in the set, the Swede dropped her serve again.

And Bronzetti soon found herself two breaks up in the second set as well.  Again, Peterson was able to recover one of them but she remained under pressure on her own serve and had to save two match points.

The Italian qualifier though would not be denied and she served out for the match in the next game.
