Alize Cornet v Mandy Minella Head to Head

Cornet leads Minella 2-0, last defeating the Luxembourgian in the final of the 2018 WTA Gstaad.

Cornet Overcomes Potapova with Ease

Alize Cornet started her campaign in the Luxembourg Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Russia’s Anastasia Potapova. The match lasted for an hour and 42 minutes and saw the Frenchwoman breeze into the second round with ease.

Cornet’s season so far has been a rather muted one, at least the majority of it. After battling form inconsistencies for the better part of the year – the results of which entail a litany of early-round exits in a plethora of tournaments, the World No. 72 found some solace in the US Open series.

The 31-year-old reached the final of the Chicago Women’s Open, falling ultimately to Elina Svitolina. That marked Cornet’s first singles final on the tour since the 2019 Swiss Open. A couple of months before that run, Cornet had also reached the semis in WTA Berlin, upsetting Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza en route.

Clearly, Cornet has the skills and experience needed to go the distance in Luxembourg.

Minella, a Doubles Finalist in Luxembourg

Since turning pro, Mandy Minella has reached the final just once at her home tournament of the Luxembourg Open. It was in the doubles discipline in 2018 with Vera Lapko – the pair ultimately fell to Greet Minnen & Alison Van Uytvanck.

The current World No. 233 has spent the year alternating between ITF and WTA events but has not got a lot to show for. As a doubles player, she did go deep in a few tournaments but as a singles player, she continued to incur early exits time after time.

Her key moments include reaching round two in WTA Lausanne and the main draw of the German Open as a qualifier.

The 35-year-old is yet to win a WTA singles title. Here in Kockelscheuer, she started as a wildcard and moved past the #77 ranked Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 6-4 to set the clash with Cornet.

Cornet v Minella Prediction and Tip

Given Cornet’s shaky form, Minella will eye another upset and hope to reach the quarters. Plus, she is playing in familiar territory and has got all the motivation needed to win here.

Expect a good game of tennis, one that may see three sets.
