Jelena Ostapenko v Liudmila Samsonova Head to Head

Ostapeko won their only meeting at the Australian Open last year, winning the first round contest in straight sets.

Ostapenko Continues Her Winning Run

2019 Luxembourg Open champion is just two wins away from repeating her exploits in 2021.

With the tournament cancelled last year due to the pandemic, the Latvian is effectively the defending champion in this year’s event and has played like one, reaching the semifinals with a straight sets win over Alize Cornet on Friday.

It was a closely fought first set, with both players breaking each other twice before Ostapenko edged out the eighth seed in the tiebreak. With the first set in the bag, the third seed dominated the second set and eventually won the contest 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in an hour and 31 minutes.

This is the second time that Ostapenko has reached the semifinals this year. The last time she went past the quarterfinals she went on to win the Eastbourne title.

Ostapenko had begun her Luxembourg challenge this year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Germany’s Jule Niemeier. She was given a tough fight by the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono in the second round, eventually beating the qualifier 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Samsonova Beats Bencic Again

Samsonova had stunned Belinda Bencic to win her maiden WTA title in Berlin earlier this year. She stunned the Olympic champion again in the quarterfinal of the Luxemborg Open on Friday to reach a second WTA semifinal this season.

The 22-year-old Russian dropped just 14 points on her serve in the entire match, saving both the break points that she faced while breaking the top seed twice in the first and once in the second to win the one-hour-and-13-minute contest 6-1, 6-4.

The World No. 48 hasn’t dropped a set this week, defeating Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round and France’s Océane Dodin 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3).

The Russian, who improved to 33-18 from all tournaments following Friday’s win, will be hoping to reach a second final this year in what has been a breakthrough season for her that has also seen her break into the top 100 and rise to a career-high ranking of 48 this week.

Ostapenko v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

The last time they met, Ostapenko won without much trouble. But Samsonova has come a long way since that defeat and will be a difficult opponent to beat this time around. However, Ostapenko is still expected to win the contest and advance to a second consecutive Luxembourg final.
