Olympic silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova reached a third semifinal this season with a straight sets upset of the second seed Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Czech left-hander converted half of the 10 break points that she had in the match while saving two of four that she faced to win the one-hour-and-37-minute contest 7-5, 6-2.
Vondrousova, who lost the gold medal match in Tokyo to Belinda Bencic, had also reached the semifinals of the Yarra Valley Classic. The 2019 French Open finalist was in top form on teh hard courts of Melbourne this year, also making a maiden appearance in the Round of 16 of the Australian Open.
It’s been a solid week for the Czech who is yet to drop a set in the tournament. She defeated Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round and then knocked out Croatian qualifier Jana Fett 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
The 22-year-old will be aiming to reach a second final this year, following her run to the title clash at the Olympics. There is a very good chance of her adding to her only title which she won in Biel/Bienne in 2017.

Tauson Breezes Past Bouzkova
Danish teen Clara Tauson is on the verge of a second WTA final, following an impressive straight sets win over the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the quarterfinal on Friday.
Tauson didn’t face a single break point in the match, while breaking Bouzkova twice in both sets to register a 6-3, 6-2 win in an hour and 32 minutes. The 18-year-old Dane was particularly good on her serve, dropped just nine points while serving in the entire match.
She was equally impressive in her opening-round match, dropping just 12 points on her serve on her way to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Astra Sharma. Tauson wasn’t broken in that match either.
She continued impressing in the second round, upsetting the fourth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1).
Ranked No. 70 in the world, Tauson is 35-13 across levels this year, which includes a maiden WTA title in Lyon. Last month, she also won a WTA 125 title in Chicago, defeating Emma Raducanu in the final.
