It has been a season of inertia and underperformance for Benoit Paire, but lately, there is an improvement as he attempts to salvage what is left of this year.
Paire began the year entrenched inside the world’s top 30. However, he put up one of the worst losing streaks in recent years, going seven matches without a win between Cordoba and Barcelona. And coupled with his motivation issues for playing behind closed doors, it seemed there was no way out of this terrible spell.
A semblance of normality was restored during the course of the season. The tennis turnstiles were opened for fans, and with it, the Frenchman has rediscovered his winning touch. Paire was one of the best-performing players in the preparatory tournaments before the US Open.
The world no. 48 reached the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters, upsetting the likes of Denis Shapovalov and John Isner before falling to Andrey Rublev. But his US Open campaign did not go as planned despite being instilled as the favoirte in the encounter against Dusan Lajovic.
Paire lost in four sets to the Serbian at Flushing Meadows and is now 13-28 for the season.

Gerasimov Subpar On American Soil
As Paire enjoyed a resurgence, his opponent Egor Gerasimov had a tough time picking up wins on the American hard courts.
Gerasimov suffered first-round exits in Washington and the US Open, and did not even make the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters. His sole win in the American summer came at Winston-Salem when he beat Norbert Gombos before losing to Richard Gasquet.
The man from Belarus is still a perennial danger on indoor hard courts. His best results on the ATP tour have come on this surface (finalist in Pune in 2020, and semifinalist in St. Petersburg in 2019). He reached his only semifinal of 2021 in Montpellier, defeating former no.1 Andy Murray and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina en route.
Gerasimov, like Paire, has a near-identical record for the season. He is 13-23, with just one win in his last six matches.
