Jaume Munar v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

Munar and Vesely have played once before this. It was the Czech lefty who won the pair’s meeting in Antwerp almost three seasons ago, 6-4 6-4.

Difficult Second Half of Season For Spaniard

Jaume Munar arrives in Astana without a single main draw win on hard courts. He is one of two players inside the top 100 (alongside Federico Delbonis) who have won all their matches in 2021 on clay.

Munar boasts a healthy 32-20 record for the season – his sole win outside clay this year coming in the qualifying rounds of the Cincinnati Masters when he beat Norbert Gombos. Aside from that, he was beaten relatively easily by Yosuke Watanuki in Winston-Salem and more recently by Aslan Karatsev at the US Open.

Munar’s current form doesn’t exactly match up to his dizzying heights of the first half of the season. He was a solid presence on clay winning 23 out of his 28 matches. That run saw him win a Challenger title in Antalya and finished runner-up at two other tournaments at that level.

The 24-year-old Spaniard also got a taste of a first ATP final in his home country at the Marbella Open. He notched up victories over the likes of Fabio Fognini and Carlos Alcaraz before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta.

Munar is yet to win a main draw match since the French Open.

Vesely An Accomplished Player Indoors

Jiri Vesely will certainly fancy his chances of earning more reputation on his decent indoor hard-court record. The Czech lefthander won his last ATP title on this surface in Pune at the start of last season.

Vesely, a former world no. 35, has been so inconsistent in recent years. His career trajectory was also blighted by a series of debilitating injuries, and we did not quite see him reach his full potential.

Still, the 28-year-old has done very good work on the Challenger tour in the past couple of seasons to haul himself into a double-digit ranking. Sitting at 89th in the world, Vesely has played a lot of clay-court tennis since the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships.

He went to the US Open on the back of playing thee ATP tournaments on the dirt and two more exhibitions on the surface. However, he managed to give a good account of himself in a dramatic five-set defeat to Kevin Anderson.

Munar v Vesely Prediction and Tip

The onus is on Vesely to go and win this match at a canter. Munar has fared poorly outside clay, and it is tough to fathom the Spaniard digging out a win in this one.
