Ymer Breaks New Ground In 2021

For much of his embryonic tennis years, Mikael Ymer spent that time establishing himself on the ATP’s second tier. Having won four Challenger titles in 2019, the Swede was destined for big things in the forthcoming season.

There was a promising start to the 2020 season in Auckland, but his career at tour level did not take off as the coronavirus pandemic wiped out pretty much the entire tennis calendar.

Ymer has made a fine imprint in 2021, winning 16 matches on tour –  the most he has attained in a single season at senior level. Five of them came in that terrific run to his first ATP final at Winston-Salem. He shocked the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Carlos Alcaraz to reach the showpiece event.

At Grand Slam level, he won a match at least a match at three of the four Majors. Bar the US Open –  where he fell to Jenson Brooksby – Ymer made the third rounds of both Australian and French Open.

Struff Exits Top 50

Jan-Lennard Struff had been a mainstay in the Top 50 since he broke that barrier in March 2019. Without a single title to show for his progress ever since, Struff has done remarkably well to stay competitive despite the emergence of a crop of youngsters.

The German who is one of the powerful hitters from the baseline, has notched a few decent results. He has made at least a quarterfinal on two occasions in each of the last five seasons at tour-level tournaments. This year he reached his first ATP final in his home country at the BMW Open in Munich.

Although Struff was denied ultimate glory by Basilashvili, that resulted served as a catalyst for his fourth-round showing at the French Open – his best achievement at Grand Slam level.  Struff’s season has gone from awesome to awry since his exploits in France’s capital.

The 31-year-old comes into Tuesday’s contest on the back of a bad run of form. He has won 3 matches from his last 12.

Ymer v Struff Prediction and Tip
