Bencic Shaking a Shock Defeat in Luxembourg

Since winning the Olympic Gold this summer in Tokyo, Belinda Bencic has continued to play in the same vein and posted consecutive quarterfinal appearances in her last three tournaments.

Just one spot shy of reaching the top 10 again, Bencic reached the final eight in Cincinnati Open and the US Open where she succumbed respectively to Jil Teichmann and Emma Raducanu respectively. Following that, she travelled to Europe for the Luxembourg Open where it was Liudmila Samsonova who stopped the Swiss in her tracks right before the semis. The World No. 44 upset Bencic 6-1, 6-4, only to lose in the next round to Jelena Ostapenko.

It has been an exceptional year for Bencic although, she will be hoping to win a singles title. She has come close on two occasions with the finalist trophies from the Adelaide International and German Open.

Tormo Starts Well

Unlike Bencic who enjoyed a bye into the second round, Sara Sorribes Tormo had to take the usual route. In the Luxembourg Open opener, she faced the Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova and defeated her 6-3, 6-3.

Playing in her first tournament since the US Open (where she too lost to Raducanu round three), Tormo has made significant strides on the tour to reach her career-best singles ranking as World No. 36. Among her highlights include quarterfinal runs in WTA Abu Dhabi and Miami Open, and later her first singles title in WTA Guadalajara.

On clay and grass, Tormo had an erratic run and it wasn’t the US Open swing that she found her rhythm again. The 24-year-old was a quarterfinalist in Montreal and later, a semifinalist in WTA Cleveland.

Tormo is a star in the making and with some time and perhaps, experience, she can reach the apex of professional tennis. But for now, her task remains a big one.

Bencic v Tormo Prediction and Tip

Bencic will start as the favourite here but Tormo is not an opponent to be taken lightly. She has grown tremendously as a player since the start of the season and she is getting closer and closer to upsetting the big guns.

Expect an intriguing game of tennis.
