Pavlyuchenkova v Martincova Head to Head

Pavlyuchenkova and Martincova have never featured in a head-to-head meeting till date. Though they reached the second round at Ostrava with contrasting wins, the Russian and the Czech will bring their inner competitiveness to the fore in their first-ever match against each other.

Pavlyuchenkova Battles Past Konjuh in Opener

With a decent run of results under her belt — a second-round finish at the Canadian Open followed by a last-16 exit at the US Open, — Pavlyuchenkova drewtricky Croat Ana Konjuh in the opening round at the Ostrava Open.

The Russian, who reached her maiden Grand Slam final at this year’s French Open and finished runner-up, faced stiff resistance from Konjuh in the first set, which went to a tiebreak.

Pavlyuchenkova pipped the Croat in the tiebreak to take the opening set. With the momentum with her, the Russian found a higher gear in the second set and dominated Konjuh to close out a commanding straight-set victory.

The Russian is likely to face another stern test from 61st-ranked Czech star Tereza Martincova in her next. Though the pair haven’t played each other before, both are established names in the women’s circuit and punches wont be held back when the two go against each other for the first time.

In her first event since the US Open, Pavlyuchenkova would hope to rediscover the form that took her to the final at Roland-Garros and the last 16 at the Flushing Meadows. However, she has her task cut out against feisty opponent in Martincova.

Martincova Overcomes Siniakova in Round One

Coming into the Ostrava championship after finishing in the last-16 at the Slovenian Open, Martincova opened her campaign against compatriot Katerina Siniakova.

And, in line with all pre-match estimates which pointed to a closely fought contest, the match,  for the longest part, had the home crowd on their edge of their seats.

Siniakova took the opening set 7-5, only to see her opponent stage a spirited fightback and take the match to a deciding set.

In the decider, both players went all out, with neither an inch yielded or taken. With the third set deadlocked at 6-6 at the end of the regulation 12 games, it was all down to the tiebreak to decide the outcome.

And, in a fitting end to a riveting contest, Martincova pipped her fellow countrywoman n the deciding-set tiebreak to eventually prevail 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(9-7).

After a hard-earned win in the first round, the Czech has to now roll her sleeves for another fierce contest against big-hitting Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Though Pavlyuchenkova is ranked comfortably higher than Martincova, expect the Czech star to come out all guns blazing against the Russian and, with the home crowd behind her, an upset could well be on the cards.
