What Happened To Karatsev?

When he burst onto the scene at this year’s Australian Open, Aslan Karatsev’s decade-long hard work had yielded massive returns big time.

Karatsev memorably reached his first Grand Slam semifinal as a qualifier and the spotlight couldn’t have shone any brighter for the Russian who was destined for big things at 28 – a ripe old age in tennis to achieve such a breakthrough.

He went on to clinch a maiden ATP title in Dubai, and reached his second final in Belgrade – scoring a career-best win over World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. His meteoric rise showed no signs of waning as the 28-year-old peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 22 during the clay season.

But Karatsev’s tally of three wins from 11 matches (between Lyon and Cincinnati) cost him a few spots and delayed his Top 20 debut. He was able to resurrect his level at Flushing Meadows in which he reached the third round, losing to an in-form Jenson Brooksby.

Last week’s surprise defeat in Nur Sultan as the top seed has made a few ardent watchers pose the question, what happened to Karatsev?

Delbonis Winless On Hard Courts in 2021

After Jaume Munar broke his duck in Nur Sultan last week, Federico Delbonis is now the lone bearer of the unwanted tag. The Argentine lefty is the only player inside the Top 100 without a single win on hard courts (including indoors) this season.

Delbonis has won a staggering 29 matches this year – all on clay. His consistency on one surface has been enough to keep his ranking afloat in the top 50.

However, the 30-year-old has lost his last five matches, undoubtedly his worst run of form in 2021. Three of those defeats have been on hard courts, in which he failed to win a single set.

Delbonis will make his first outing in almost a month. He was beaten comfortably by Denis Shapovalov at the US Open at the end of August.

Karatsev v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

It would be a poignant experience should Karatsev lose this one against an opponent who is yet to taste that winning feeling for some time. Expect this to be a straightforward tie for the World No. 25.
