Davidovich Fokina Snaps Losing Streak In Metz

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina returned to winning ways in Metz this past week, but he was pushed to the brink by the veteran Gilles Simon.

Davidovich Fokina had dropped the first set in a tiebreak, and Simon sensed blood as he dug deep in his reservoir to squeeze more ounces of energy out of his 36-year-old legs. Eventually, the second set went the young Spaniard’s way, and the Frenchman could not keep up his level in the third due to fatigue.

As a result of that win, the World No. 45 Davidovich Fokina snapped his four-match losing streak dating back to the Tokyo Olympics. He failed to scale the first round of Toronto, Cincinnati, and perhaps more strikingly at the US Open when he lost to Argentinean journeyman Marco Trungelliti.

The 22-year-old, who spotted a new look in Metz, could not keep up his momentum for long despite taking romping to a 6-0 lead against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round. The Georgian battled back to win in three sets.

Paire Far From Ideal In Nur Sultan

It has been a mixed season for Benoit Paire in 2021. Inconsistency, motivation issues, you name it. But when the Frenchman decides to turn it on, few in the world can live with him. That is why the word mercurial fits him and his personality.

Paire’s endured the worst possible start to his season. He started the year entrenched inside the world’s top 30. However, he went seven matches without a win between Cordoba and Barcelona. And coupled with his motivation issues for playing behind closed doors, it seemed there was no way out of this terrible spell.

When he snapped his losing streak at the Braunschweig Challenger in July, Paire took some encouraging steps in his subsequent clay-court tournaments in Hamburg and Gstaad, making the last eight at each of those tournaments.

Paire’s ranking has plummeted in recent months, losing his spot in the world’s top 50 after most of his points earned during the 2019 season falling off. His defeat to Egor Gerasimov in Nur Sultan means that he is now 0-3 heading to Sofia.

Davidovich Fokina v Paire Prediction and Tip

While Paire was far from his best, he did run Gerasimov pretty close in Nur Sultan. And it is pertinent to note, the Belarusian is a perennial danger on an indoor hard-court. Should Davidovich Fokina produce another uninspiring display from the one he served up in Metz against Simon, this could be another tough afternoon for him.
