Donna Vekic lost to compatriot Ana Konjuh in the first round of the Slovenian Open a fortnight ago. It was another matchup that demonstrated the key to maintaining a top ranking to avoid hard draws in the early rounds.
Vekic has paid a heavy price for her deteriorating ranking. Less than three months ago, the 25-year-old Croatian was ranked inside the world’s top 50. But with the rankings freeze being lifted, Vekic’s points which were earned abundantly in North America in 2019 came off.
She was a quarterfinalist at the 2019 US Open and had performed well prior to that in San Jose and Cincinnati. But after losing her top 100 status following a spate of early exits in those tournaments this year, the former World No. 19 will be on salvage operation for the remainder of this season.
Vekic, it should be noted, had a rocky road following the Australian Open. She underwent knee surgery that kept her out of the game for nearly four months.

Li Falls To Vandweghe In Columbus
Ann Li was the top seed at the WTA 125K series tournament in Columbus this week, losing to Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets in the quarterfinals. Li was broken three times by the former World No. 9 and won just 10 points behind the return.
Li has been in impressive form in her first full season on the main tour. In 21 matches, she has posted 13 victories and shared the prize money for reaching her first WTA final at the Grampians Trophy. After a delayed schedule during the week, the final could not be played in that tournament meaning she is yet to contest a WTA final.
The 21-year-old made the third round of the Australian Open shortly after, losing to Aryna Sabalenka. She would make two more semifinals at WTA tour tournaments during the course of the season.
At this time last year, Li was ranked outside the Top 100. But after puncturing the centurion club last November, she has propelled herself to as high as World No. 66 in less than 12 months.
Vekic v Li Prediction and Tip
Li has risen through the ranks very quickly and is certainly one to keep an eye on next season. Taking the upset here against a rather inconsistent Donna Vekic looks well priced.
