Garbine Muguruza v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head
There have been five previous meetings between them and Muguruza leads 3-2, which includes a three-set win in the last tournament they played before this. It came in US Open where Muguruza won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to march into the round of 16.
They were also supposed to meet in Doha earlier this year but Azarenka had to pull out of that semifinal encounter because of fitness concerns.

Muguruza Carves out Li Win
It might have been a straight-set win for Muguruza to kick-start proceedings in this competition but the Spaniard was stretched in her second round match by American Ann Li.
In the end, Muguruza needed an hour and a half to carve out a 6-4, 6-4 victory, despite being broken twice in the encounter.
Muguruza frittered away an early break of serve when Li levelled things out at 2-2 but the Spaniard broke right back to clinch the opening set.
The second set followed the opening script to a large extent, with Muguruza and Li exchanging breaks again to take them to 3-3. Li, however, failed to hold her serve under pressure at 4-4 and Muguruza served it out the next game to seal the win.
With a first round bye to begin proceedings, Muguruza will now need to suddenly up the ante against a player of the calibre of Azarenka.

Azarenka Stretched by Baptiste
After one of the most straightforward wins to kick-start this competition against Shuai Zhang, Azarenka needed to dig real deep in her second round encounter.
The Belarusian needed three sets to get past USA’s Hailey Baptiste, a match that lasted two hours and eight minutes helping her seal her third round place.
Three breaks in as many games put Azarenka in the driver’s seat in the first set and the match looked to be headed in the direction expected by bookmakers who had offered 11/2 for a Hailey win.
It was in the second set that the American began to make life difficult for her more illustrious opponent, saving a couple of break-points and then breaking Azarenka as she served to stay in the set at 4-5.
And when Azarenka dropped serve once again in the second game of the decider, things could have really gone awry. Instead, the former world number one broke back twice to take command and finished off the encounter with a third successive break of serve.

It remains a contest in the offing that could see a third set with Azarenka’s battle-hardness and Muguruza’s slight rustiness making it an even contest.
