Belinda Bencic v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Bencic leads Martincova 2-0, last defeated the Czech in the 2018 WTA ‘s-Hertogenbosch in straight sets.

Bencic Overcomes Inglis

Olympic gold winner Belinda Bencic found herself in a slogfest against the Australian qualifier, 130th ranked Maddison Inglis in her WTA 500 Chicago opener. The number three seed lost the first set before staging a heroic, stylish comeback to take the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 in two hours and 13 minutes.

The Swiss is now just one win away from reaching her sixth consecutive quarterfinal on the tour. Since winning the Tokyo Olympics, the 24-year-old has featured in the quarters in WTA Cincinnati, US Open, Luxembourg Open, and most recently, the WTA Ostrava. In three of these events, Bencic has fallen to players who have moved on to reach the final/win the tournament.

As for her exploits in terms of finals and trophies, Bencic hasn’t won a WTA title since the Kremlin Cup in 2019. This year, she reached two singles finals (WTA Adelaide and German Open) but fell in both those finals respectively to Iga Swiatek and Liudmilla Samsonova.

Such is the kind of consistency that Bencic has enjoyed in 2021 as World No. 12 is now a stone’s throw away from becoming a top 10 player again.

Martincova on a Roll

Tereza Martincova hasn’t dropped a set so far in the Chicago Open as she comfortably dispatched the likes of María Camila Osorio Serrano (6-3, 7-5) and Tamara Zidansek (6-2, 7-5) to reach the third round.

One more win here and she will find herself competing in yet another quarterfinal on the tour; her most recent such stint came in WTA Ostrava last week where she succumbed to Maria Sakkari in the same round. Interestingly enough, the 26-year-old Czech was a quarterfinalist in the WTA 250 edition of the Chicago Open where she retired in the final set against Rebecca Peterson.

Looking at her overall season, the current World No. 53 has had a fabulous year – marked by her rise from outside the top 120 to her current ranking. She found a lot of success in the grass swing, notably in the WTA Nottingham and Birmingham where she reached successive quarterfinals.

Then a few weeks later in Prague, Martincova reached the final at her home tournament of Prague Open, losing to Barbora Krejcikova.

There is no doubt that Tereza Martincova is a promising player capable of going the distance although, it may seem like she still needs a bit more time and experience.

Bencic v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Bencic will start as the favourite but Martincova is coming off a fine run herself and will fancy herself to be a quarterfinalist in Chicago. Expect a good game of tennis where the Swiss should come out on the top in three sets.
