John Millman v Marcos Giron Head to Head

55th-ranked Millman has never faced off against Marcos Giron at tour-level before this. However, the pair have played once before at the Canberra Challenger in 2015. The American won in straight sets.

Millman Upends Marchenko

After his failure to defend his title in Nur Sultan, John Millman has exited the world’s Top 50 for the first time since October 2019. And now Millman is in a race against time to try and re-enter it with a deep run in Sofia before the ATP season enters its final month of regular tennis.

So far, the coltish Australian has taken some encouraging steps this week. He beat Mikael Ymer in surprisingly routine fashion before he produced a fine comeback to defeat Ilya Marchenko in three sets on Thursday.

Millman dropped a tight opening set but was supremely successful in the second tiebreak in which he won without losing a single point. And after the pair of them exchanged breaks early on in the third, Marchenko was next to blink. The Ukrainian World No. 151 smacked 11 aces in the whole match, but could not haul himself in the most important moments in the match.

Millman, who embodied the definition of an Iron Man, went on to convert two more breakpoints sealing victory in two hours and 33 minutes of play.

Giron Conquers De Minaur For The Third Time

Marcos Giron produced the biggest shock at the Sofia Open so far after he knocked out the third seed and World No. 26 Alex De Minaur to reach his fourth quarterfinal of the season.

The American secured his second win in as many weeks over the hard-running De Minaur, having beaten him on the indoor hardcourt in Metz less than a week ago. This time, in almost a mirror scoreline, Giron pinched two tiebreak sets after two hours of high octane tennis.

De Minaur let slip a 4-2 lead in the first set tiebreak as Giron’s bold groundstrokes caused him all sorts of trouble. The 28-year-old won five of the next six points to steal the set.

In the second set, Giron’s attempts to throw caution to the wind paid dividends as he recovered a break deficit while De Minaur served to level the match. And with the set going into another nail-biting breaker, it was Giron’s fast start in which he racked up six straight points that proved decisive.

Millman v Giron Prediction and Tip

With Giron having De Minaur’s number in recent weeks, it makes you question whether Millman could do better than his compatriot. Millman certainly has the tools to trouble the American, but it is tough to imagine him doing it again over three sets.
