Shelby Rogers v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

Rogers and Kalinina have not played each other before this at tour level. But they have contested matches at ITF level, where the head-to-head is 1-1. Kalinina won in Osprey in 2015, and Rogers avenged that loss in last season’s Midland ITF final when the Ukrainian was forced to pull out from the championship due to injury.

Rogers Succumbs To Hontama Upset

Shelby Rogers looked likely to push for a deep run in Chicago after mastering an upset win over Bianca Andreescu. But Rogers finished second best to the surprise package at the tournament, Mai Hontama. The 22-year-old Japanese pulled off a fine win in three sets against the much-fancied Rogers.

Now the attention turns to the BNP Paribas Open where Rogers has a modest record of three wins from five visits. Her last defeat came at the hands of compatriot Caroline Dolehide, clearly illustrating Rogers’ inconsistency at tour level.

But 2021 is undoubtedly her best season on tour. She has won 24 matches from a possible 44 so far, eclipsing her previous best of 23, garnered in 2017. Her ability to keep her health in check has enabled the American to enjoy a productive year.

Rogers is one of only eight players to inflict defeat to World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty this term. Will the 28-year-old American address her poor record at the desert?

Kalinina Returns After Portoroz Absence

Anhelina Kalinina pulled out from her last outing in the second round of the Slovenian Open, three weeks ago. The nature of her injury remains undisclosed, and we are not entirely sure if her issue was precautionary.

But given that the 24-year-old did not sign up for subsequent WTA events, she was clearly convalescing from a physical problem.

Kalinina is set for her debut appearance at the Indian Wells tennis garden. This is her first visit of any kind to these parts, having not played any qualifying matches in previous years.

The Ukrainian has put together a solid season on the WTA tour, with her major highlight coming on the clay courts of Budapest during the summer. She also soared to a career-high ranking of World No. 60 in the past month.

After winning back-to-back ITF titles in Montpellier and Contrexville, she nearly completed a three-peat by winning her maiden WTA title in Hungary, only to finish runner-up to Yulia Putintseva.

Rogers v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Rogers should certainly have the measure of this rapidly improving Ukrainian, despite her poor record at Indian Wells.
