Marketa Vondrousova v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Vondrousova, on a Roll

22-year-old Marketa Vondrousova is heading into the Indian Wells Open on the back of consecutive semifinal appearances on the tour. Most recently, she played in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic where she reached the semis, upsetting Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Jil Teichmann, and Danielle Collins. She was slated to play Garbine Muguruza for the final berth but withdrew from the match.

Before that, the left-handed Czech delivered a similar run in the Luxembourg Open – this time defeating the number two seed Elise Mertens en route.

After a somewhat muted spell in the first half of the season, Vondrousova has picked up the pace following the Tokyo Olympics, where she achieved a silver-medal finish.

Currently ranked World No. 37, Vondrousova started the year on a strong note with a semifinal run in the Yarra Valley Classic and a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open and Miami Open.

The last year’s French Open runner-up has also posted progressively impressive results in the Indian Wells Open – fourth-round in 2019 and quarterfinal the next year. Vondrousova may be unseeded in the valley but she is a player capable of a deep run here.

Golubic, Working Relentlessly

Viktorija Golubic may not have won a singles title this season but by no means she is to be taken lightly. Her win-loss tally stands at an impressive 45-19 (Vondrousova’s is 29-17) although, she hasn’t been entirely promising in the American swing.

Following the Olympics, the Swiss has spent her time competing in Northern America. Across five distinct events spanning Montreal, Cincinnati, Chicago, and New York, Golubic’s best results entail a feeble second-round appearance in WTA 250 Chicago – losing to Rebecca Peterson.

The 28-year-old was a lot more menacing in the first half of the season when she reached two ITF finals and two WTA finals, along with winning the WTA 125K event in Saint-Malo. On the back of these consistent runs, Golubic moved up from the late 130s to her current ranking of World No. 46.

The Wimbledon and Eastbourne Open quarterfinalist has got the skills and experience needed to topple Vondrousova. The question is can she do it?

Vondrousova v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova, following her recent run, will start as the favourite but Golubic is a player capable of pulling the upset trigger. Expect a scintillating game of tennis.
