Paolini Enters Main Draw as Lucky Loser

Seeded No. 1 in the qualifying rounds, Jasmine Paolini lost her second qualifying match to Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova 1-6, 3-6 on Tuesday. However, the Italian still made her way to the main draw as a lucky loser. Paolini had beaten Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-1, 6-4 in the first qualifying round on Monday.

Ranked No. 63 in the world, the 25-year-old Italian has made tremendous progress this season and has come to Indian Wells with a 26-20 season record, which includes her maiden WTA title that she claimed in Portoroz, Slovenia last month.

Paolini, who reached two WTA 125K finals this season, winning the title in Bol and finishing runner-up in Saint Malo, defeated higher-ranked players in Dayana Yastremska, Sorana Cirstea, Yulia Putintseva and Alison Riske on her way to capturing the Slovenian Open title.

She fell in the first round in Chicago last week to Hailey Baptiste, but will be hopping to start with a win at Indian Wells.

Hontama Qualifies With Back-to-Back Straight Set Wins

Mai Hontama was terrific in Chicago last week, reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament in what was her main draw debut at the top level.

The Japanese player has now qualified for her second WTA event, with back-to-back straight set wins over the last two days.

Hontama defeated Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 7-5, 7-5 on Monday and then knocked out Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova 6-3, 6-4 in the second qualifying round on Tuesday.

The Japanese came into the tournament with a 39-13 record from all her matches this season with her breakthrough coming at the Chicago Fall Classic, where she qualified for the main draw with wins over Emina Bektas and Harriet Dart and then went on to beat Caroline Garcia and Shelby Rogers on her way to the last eight before falling to eventual champion Garbine Muguruza.

The 22-year-old has featured in four ITF finals this year, winning two and losing two.

Paolini v Hontama Prediction and Tip
