Sam Querrey v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on the clay of Geneva in 2017, Querrey winning in straight sets.

Querrey’s Poor Recent Form

Querrey, known for his big serve, has a decent record in Indian Wells, having been a quarter-finalist in 2018 and twice prior to that having reached the fourth round.

2021 has not been his best year on tour, although he did reach his first final in two years on the grass of Mallorca in June, losing on that occasion to Daniil Medvedev. That defeat extended his wait for a senior title, which now extends back to the Los Cabos Open in 2017.

After Mallorca he travelled to Wimbledon where he produced a fine win in the first round to beat the number 11 seed, Pablo Carreno-Busta in straight sets.

However, he was then beaten by James Duckworth, and has lost every match he has played since, suffering first round defeats in Newport, Los Cabos, Atlanta, Washington, and Flushing Meadows.

He has not played competitively since losing to Alexander Zverev at the US Open.

German Clay Court Player Altmaier

Altmaier has won two tournaments on the Challenger tour this year, both in clay, and both on home soil in Germany.

And it was on clay that he produced his best ever result in a Grand Slam last year, reaching the fourth round of the French Open, in the process achieving his only win against a player ranked in the top ten at the time, in the form of Matteo Berrettini.

Sadly, for him he was unable to emulate that feat this year, losing in the second round of qualifying.

Although he plays on the Challenger circuit, he did enjoy two successful forays on to the main tour in July. In Umag, he came through qualifying and went all the win to the semi-finals before losing to the experienced Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

And he followed that up with another semi-final appearance in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

It is no coincidence that both of those were clay court events.

Querrey v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Although Querrey’s recent from has been poor, the odds and conditions heavily favour the big serving American against the German, whose best results tend to come on a clay court.
