Belinda Bencic v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, and Bencic leads their head-t0-head series by four matches to one.

Rogers won their first meeting at a junior event in 2013, but since then it has been a clean sweep for the Swiss women. Their most recent match was at Cincinnati in August, Bencic winning in straight sets.

Double Olympic Medallist Bencic

Bencic had a fine Olympics, winning the gold in the singles, the biggest victory of her senior career, and the silver in the doubles with partner Viktoria Golubic.

Although she was given a bye in the first round here, she will have fond memories of her last visit to Indian Wells in 2019, when she got to the semi-finals, beating along the way the world number one at the time, Naomi Osaka.

Her record in major tournaments this year  has been good – she reached the quarter-finals in Madrid and Cincinnati, going on to reach the same stage at the US Open, before becoming one of Emma Radecanu’s victims.

She has played in three tournaments since, losing in the second round in Luxembourg and Ostrava, and, last week, notching up another quarter-final in Chicago, eventually losing to Elena Rybakina.

Rogers Has Matched Previous Best at Indian Wells

Rogers’ best result recently came at the US Open, where she knocked out the top seed and world number one Ashleigh Barty, before losing to Emma Radecanu, the second time she had made the fourth round of a Grand Slam in 2021 after the Australian Open where she also achieved the feat.

This is her sixth time at Indian Wells, and she has now matched her previous best by reaching the second round.

She was made to work hard though for her passage, especially in the first set, by Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, the world number 62.

The match began with the first three games going against serve, and, although that left Rogers a break-up, another three consecutive dropped service games meant that the scores were level.

With nothing more to separate them, it went to a tie-break, where Rogers was flawless, Kalinina less so, and the American claimed the first set.

The second set began with the pair swapping breaks, but having saved break points, Rogers broke again. The Ukrainian served to stay in the match, saved two break points, but not the third.

Bencic v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Bencic has had much the better of the previous encounters between these two, and there is little evidence to suggest that things will be any different this time round.
