Leylah Fernandez v Alize Cornet Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 19 year old Canadian, and the Frenchwoman, who is twelve years older.

First Match for Fernandez Since US Open Final

This will be Fernandez’s first match since losing the final of the US Open to Emma Radecanu.

Whilst the disappointment of that defeat may still linger, she should take a great deal of pride from what she achieved in Flushing Meadows, having beaten Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and Arnya Sabalenka en route to that final.

And she can still look back on her season with a  great deal of satisfaction, having won her maiden WTA title in Monterrey, and broken into the top 30 for the first time.

She has never played at Indian Wells before, and, having been given a bye in the first round, will be keen to make her mark on this event.

Cornet Makes Second Round for the First Time

Although she has been on tour for a number of years, this is just the second time in the main draw for Cornet at Indian Wells, and the first time she has been beyond the opening round.

She was drawn in the first round against the Romanian Elena Gabriela Ruse, who won the Hamburg Open earlier this year, and was also a semi-finalist in Palermo, but who is more at home on clay.

Cornet began badly, dropping the opening service game of the match, but then hit back with two breaks of her own against the world number 92,  enabling her to close out the first set.

Ruse held serve at the start of the second set, and found herself a break-up after a sequence of five games which went against serve.

The Romanian had two set points, could not convert them and Cornet was able to break back and eventually force a tie-break.

And it was Cornet who clinched the match, after Ruse saved the first two match points against her.

Fernandez v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Fernandez has had a month now to recover after the physical and emotional toil of the US Open and should be ready to get back on court, eager to get back to winning ways again. She should be able to deal with the challenge of Cornet, who was hardly convincing in her first round victory, without too much difficulty.
