Swiatek Set For Indian Wells Main Draw Debut

At the last staging of the Indian Wells tournament in 2019, Iga Swiatek was yet to become a prominent player. Still a teenager and whose career was about to take off, she would lose in the second round of qualifying to Ysaline Bonaventure.

Now on her second trip to the desert, she may be fresh-faced but she is an upstart and certainly one of the most important pillars in Poland’s tennis fraternity. Swiatek has since bagged a maiden Grand Slam title at last year’s French Open, and has added two more trophies to her cabinet (Adelaide and Rome) – both won this season.

The 20-year-old was unsuccessful in her Roland Garros title defense in the Paris summer, but she has put together another fine season. She is 33-12 so far and sits at a career-high ranking of World No. 4. She has a huge chance of locking her place at the WTA Finals with a deep run at Indian Wells.

In the absence of high-profile names such as Ashleigh Barty and Aryna Sabalenka, she will be the second seed this fortnight – the highest she has been seeded at a WTA 1000 series.

Martic Downs Volynets

Petra Martic produced a superb performance in her opening round in beating the American wild card Katie Volynets 6-4 6-4 in an hour and 46 minutes.

Martic withstood some brave and bold hitting from the World No. 182, to book her spot in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open for the first time in 11 years. In fact, the last time Martic made it to the second round, her opponent Iga Swiatek had not turned professional.

Martic served big, hammering a total of six aces but also accounted for seven double faults. She won 79% of first-serve points andd saved five of six breakpoints on her serve. She was able to break the American three times in the entire match.

The 30-year-old Croat will be seeking her first top-10 win of the season when she faces Swiatek for the first time on Friday.

Swiatek v Martic Prediction and Tip

Martic’s serve and forehand are known to be destructive weapons in her game. But the dropshot is an underated ploy in her arsenal. If she can use it to disrupt Swiatek’s momentum, she might make a match out of this. But nonetheless, the Pole should be too strong over the course of three sets.
