Hubert Hurkacz v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

World No. 12 Hubert Hurkacz and World No. 69 Alexei Popyrin will meet for the first time on Saturday.

Hurkacz Seeks To Confirm ATP Finals Spot

Hubert Hurkacz has a terrific record on hard courts in 2021, and more so, on American soil where he won two titles in the early part of the season (Delray and Miami). The win in Miami in particular, propelled him to a jaw-dropping 10-0 record when he returned back to North America in August.

However, Hurkacz has not had it all plain sailing. His unbeaten run came to a juddering halt when he lost to Daniil Medvedev in Canada and was subsequently beaten by Carreno Busta in Cincinnati, and perhaps more shockingly by Andreas Seppi in the second round of the US Open.

That defeat at Flushing Meadows to the Italian only served to inspire Hurkacz to rediscover his winning touch. A fourth career title beckoned in Metz when Hurkacz signed up for the event as the top seed. He won the title without dropping a set, simultaneously serving up some old-fashioned revenge against Carreno Busta in the final.

The Pole made it a case for double celebrating, picking the doubles title in Metz too alongside compatriot Jan Zielinski.

Popyrin Downs Kecmanovic In Opener

Alexei Popyrin piled more misery on Miomir Kecamanovic, as he inflicted the 23rd defeat on the Serbian’s woeful 2021 season.

The Aussie won 6-3 7-6 in an hour and 28 minutes of play. He fired five aces and averaged over 70% of both first and second serves. Popyrin was also clinical on breakpoints conversion. He converted 2 out of 2, while also decisively saving one on his serve.

Popyrin had a dismal start to proceedings in the North American summer series. He failed to scale the first round at four tournaments, losing the last two in qualifying rounds. However, he snapped that run with a win in Winston-Salem and came to Indian Wells on the back of a decent third-round showing at the US Open.

Can the Aussie pick up his 21st match win 2021 –  the most he has put together at tour level?

Hurkacz v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz will look to ward off a series of challengers in a battle for the last coveted spot in the ATP Race to Turin. This, however, is not an easy opening match for him despite what the odds suggest. We expect the Pole to go through a few speedbumps en route to victory.
