Reilly Opelka v Grigor Dimitrov  Head to Head

Opelka abd Dimitrov have been involved in just a solitary career head-to-head meeting till date. The only time they went against each other was in the third round of this year’s Canadian Open, with the big-serving American running out a comprehensive 6-3, 6-4 winner.

Opelka Downs Daniel

Coming into the Indian Wells Masters on the back of a last-16 finish at the year’s last Grand Slam, the US Open, and a campaign that ended in failure again for Team  World at the Laver Cup, Opelka drew Taro Daniel of Japan in his tournament opener.

Currently ranked 20th in singles, the big-server got off to a rousing start and the relentless pressure that he brought to bear on his opponent was eventually helped him bag the opening set 7-5.

Moving through the gears, the American came into his own in the second set, sending down screamers past a hapless Daniel and firing winners at will to race to a clear lead and eventually cruise home 7-5, 6-3.

However, the lanky American faces a much tougher opponent in veteran Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in his next.

While Opelka will take happy memories of his win in his only previous head-to-head outing against the seasoned Bulgarian at the Canadian Open earlier this season, he will be making a fresh start against an opponent who will be hurting from that loss and will be itching to even the score.

However, he keeps serving up smoldering aces like he did against Daniel in the second round, a second straight career win over the Bulgarian wouldn’t seem too fat-fetched.

Dimitrov Thumps Altmaier

From the low of an injury-enforced withdrawal from the US Open to the high of a semifinal finish in San Diego, Dimitrov ran a flood of emotions between two events.

While his vigil in San Diego ended with a last-four defeat to eventual champion Casper Ruud, the campaign sure helped in lifting his spirits and confidence  from the Flushing Meadows and put him in a good headspace going into his Indian Wells opener against Daniel Altmaier of Germany.

The Bulgarian was off to a flier against the unheralded German as he dominated the passage of play and raced to 6-4 win in the opening set. Finding a higher gear in the second, the current World No. 28 thumped Altmaier 6-2 to close out a comprehensive victory.

The manner of win was just the dose of confidence he needed going into his revenge outing against giant American Reilly Opelka.

While the Bulgarian had no answer to Opelka’s big, booming serves in their only previous head-to-head clash at this year’s Canadian Open, the experience of that defeat itself will help him come out with a better strategy to nail the big American this time round.

However, Opelka, on his part, won’t be sitting on his laurels and will be determined to make it 2-0 on head-to-head count.

Opelka v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

While Opelka will mine the home support to his advantage in this third-round battle, recent run of results will give Dimitrov  the confidence and self-belief he needs to go level with the American on head-to-head score. Backing Opelka here to hold the edge.
