Daniil Medvedev v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

The head-to-head between Medvedev and Krajinovic is tied at 1-1 in the series. Incidentally, their first meeting was at Indian Wells in 2019 where Krajinovic shocked Medvedev in straight sets. The Russian World No. 2 avenged that loss at this year’s Australian Open in five sets.

Medvedev Stays Perfect Against McDonald

Daniil Medvedev opened his 2021 Indian Wells campaign in a grand manner. He eased past American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 6-2, polishing up the win in just 73 minutes of play.

The Russian’s serve was impregnable. He did not face a single breakpoint in the contest and won well over 80% of points behind both first and second serves. What was perhaps even more staggering was Medvedev’s relentless pursuit of every ball and covering the court with so much ease in just his first competitive outing since winning the US Open.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, McDonald had actually played some good points in the match as he tried to go toe-to-toe with ATP’s current kingpin. Medvedev secured three service breaks and consequently extended his winning sequence over the American to 5-0.

The top seed has now won 17 of his past 18 matches, and 25 out of the last 26 sets he has played. He also improved his current record in the desert to 4-3, and will be keen to atone for his 2019 defeat to Krajinovic on Monday.

Krajinovic Stuns In-form Giron

Filip Krajinovic dug deep and produced a terrific perofrmance to defeat one of the ATP’s in-form players on hard courts. Giron had been playing some of the best tennis of his life this season, highligted by three quarterfinal finishes, and most recently reaching his first ATP tour semifinal in Sofia.

But historically, Krajinovic has made a knack of defying the odds at this tournament. He reached the Round of 16 as qualifier in 2019, beating the likes of Medvedev and David Goffin.

The Serbian World No. 29 needed to save six breakpoints in a tight opening set which went into a tiebreak. Giron paid the ultimate price for not taking his chances as Krajinovic romped to take the breaker 7-2.

In the second set, Krajinovic looked to be running away with match having garnered two breaks of service early on. And despite Giron recovering one break, the Serb always looked in the ascenadacy with the insurance break of serve.

However, the American responded by breaking to love while Krajinovic served for the match. Unfortunately for Giron, this was an evening in which his serve malfunctioned badly, and subsequently dropped his third service giving Krajinovic a second bite of the cherry.

Medvedev v Krajinovic Prediction and Tip

Medvedev made a real statement of intent in his opening match and seems to be in terrific shape. But going by the last two meetings, this looks like tough matchup for the Russian. We expect Krajinovic to make things a little problematic, however, Medvedev should advance.
