Kerber Edges Past Kasatkina

2019 Indian Wells runner-up Angelique Kerber moved into the Round of 16 in this year’s edition, after scoring a second three-set win in the tournament.

The German left-hander, who had started the tournament with a dramatic 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 victory over the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in a two-hour-and-26-minute second-round contest, needed an hour and 47 minutes to defeat Russia’s Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the third round on Monday.

With a win in what was the ninth meeting between the two, Kerber now has a 5-4 head to head lead over Kasatkina.

Both players converted six break points in the match, but it was Kerber who won the important moments. She saved all three of the break points that she faced in the first set, while converting two, and got one break more than Kasatkina’s two in the third. The Russian had dominated the second, breaking the German’s serve four times while getting broken once.

With Monday’s win the World No. 15 improved her season record to 28-14. It’s a year when the 33-year-old ended a three-year title drought to capture her 13th tour-level title, when she beat Siniakova in the final in Hamburg.

Kereber had made it to the final at Indian Wells in 2019 finished runner-up to Bianca Andreescu.

Tomljanovic Keeps the Winning Run Going

World no. 47 Ajla Tomljanovic eliminated another seeded player in the tournament on Monday as she moved into the fourth round at Indian Wells for the first time in her career. She had never gone past the Round of 64 in the previous six appearances.

A couple of days after upsetting the fifth seed Garbine Muguruza in the second round of the tournament, Tomljanovic pulled off another surprise on Monday, defeating the No. 26 seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 6-4, 6-3.

Breaking her opponent seven times in the match and saving three of seven break points, the Australian wrapped up the contest in an hour and 36 minutes.

Tomljanovic, who had begun her campaign with a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of the United States’ Usue Maitane Arconada in the first round, had beaten Muguruza 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a hard fought second round match on Saturday.

This is only the second time this year that the Australian has won three consecutive matches. The only other time she did that was at the Wimbledon, where she reached the last eight stage before bowing out to compatriot Ashleigh Barty.

Kerber v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Kerber’s been in brilliant form over the last couple of months and it will be a massive challenge for the Aussie to stop her. Expect the German to advance to a fifth quarterfinal of the season.
