Khachanov Breezes Past Carreno Busta

Karen Khachanov breezed past Pablo Carreno Busta for a second time this season to enter the fourth round at the Indian Wells Open for a second time in his career.

A quarterfinalist in the last edition of the tournament in 2019, the Russian needed just 64 minutes to send the Spaniard packing on Tuesday.

The Olympic silver medallist didn’t face a single break point in the match and was extremely dominant in the first set, dropping just one point on his serve and winning 27 of the 37 points in the set on his way to bagelling Carreno Busta. Khachanov was brilliant on his serve in the second as well, dropping just four points as he completed the 6-0, 6-4 victory.

With the win, the Russian now has a 4-3 head-to-head lead over Carreno Busta, who he denied a place in the gold medal match in Tokyo.

Ranked 29th in the world, Khachanov is 31-20 this season. Apart from his run to the Olympic final, he also made a quarterfinal debut at Wimbledon, but hasn’t been in the best of forms lately, coming into the tournament with a 4-5 record from the last nine matches, which go back to the Tokyo final.

He had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori and on Wednesday will be hoping to reach the last eight stage of a tournament for a seventh time this year.

Basilashvili Overturns First-Set Deficit To Advance

Nikoloz Basilashvili continued his march in the tournament with a tough three-set win over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the third round on Tuesday.

The Georgian saved 6 of 10 break points in the up-and-down contest and converted 5 of 6 on his way to a 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory in two hours and 24 minutes.

With a 5-6 lead in the second set, Ramos Vinolas had a chance to serve out the contest, but Basilashvili broke the Spaniard and somehow managed to stay in the contest. The Georgian went on to dominate the tiebreak and once he was back on level terms, he ran away  with the third set.

In the previous round Basilashvili had beaten American Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-3.

This is the first time that Basilashvili has gone beyond the first round at Indian Wells. He is 29-24 this season, which includes title runs in Doha and Munich interspersed with plenty of first round exits. Can he reach an eight quarterfinal this season?
