Fritz Scores Miracle Comeback Against Zverev

Taylor Fritz played his first ever Masters 1000 quarter-final, incidentally at the same venue where he often visited to watch the tournament as a kid.

Having defeated Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini and winner of three ATP titles this year Jannik Sinner convincingly in the last rounds with the identical 6-4, 6-3 scoreline, Fritz was up against one of the tournament favorites Alexander Zverev in the quarters.

Although Zverev got off to a flier in the first set breaking Fritz early, the American clawed back and broke, only to drop serve again and let the German take the first set.

Fritz broke early in the third to go up 4-1 and then held to close the set 6-3 heading into a deciding third set.

Zverev looked in complete control of the third set breaking early and serving out the match at 5-2. However, nerves crept in as Zverev let go of match points at 5-2, 5-3, 5-4 with the set heading into a tiebreak.

The American played a dominating tiebreak to go up 4-0 early and then there was no looking back as Zverev capitulated 3-7 in the breaker with Fritz clinching a spot in the final four of this tournament.

After Khachanov, Basilashvili Defeats Tsitsipas

Nikoloz Basilashvili has had an up and down season, where he started the year with a six match losing streak, but then went on to win the ATP 250 in Doha defeating Roger Federer en route. He later followed it with a title win in Munich that included a convincing win against one of the better clay courters this season, i.e. Casper Ruud

The Georgian has never been past the opening round at the Indian Wells Masters 1000, but looked good this last fortnight as he defeated American Christopher Eubanks and Spanish veteran Albert Ramos- Vinalos to get his campaign started.

A hard fought win in the fourth round against Karen Khachanov put Basilashvili in the final eight against the number two seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Doha champion started strong breaking Tsitsipas early and going up in the first set and clinching the set 6-4. Tsitsipas started convincingly in the second set and rushed through it 6-2 with two breaks of serve.

A lively start to the third set followed as the players stayed at par heading to 3-3, but when Tsitsipas double faulted to get broken and go down 3-4, there was no looking back for Basilashvili as he clinched the set and the match booking himself a spot in the semis for a Masters 1000 for the first time.
