Muguruza Makes Return to Top 5

With most tennis player contemplating their holidays as the season reaches its climax, Garbine Muguruza is not one of those. The World No. 5 has enjoyed a career resurgence in 2021, highlighted by a return to the upper echelons in the women’s game.

Muguruza has captured two titles this season, one as recently as the start of October in Chicago. She benefitted from a couple of walkovers en route to the final where she defeated the in-form Tunisian Ons Jabeur. She also won the Dubai Championships at the start of the year, ending her near two-year drought.

The 28-year-old is currently 37-15 for the year, picking up an impressive 30 wins in hard courts. And granted she reached the second week at three Grand Slam tournaments, she did not scale the fourth round at any of them – certainly an area of general improvement for the forthcoming season.

Muguruza fell to a disappointing second-round exit at the BNP Paribas Open. She lost in three sets to Ajla Tomljanovic. She is set to feature at the Kremlin Cup for the first time.

Martincova Sees Off Bara

With Muguruza receiving a bye in the first round for being the No. 2 seed, Tereza Martincova didn’t have that luxury at her disposal. The Czech was in action on Tuesday as she comfortably beat Romanian qualifier, Irina Bara, 6-0 7-5.

In her fourth participation at the Kremlin Cup, and her very first in the main draw, the tattooed Czech broke her opponent’s serve six times from nine opportunities. She completed the first set whitewash in just 32 minutes winning 13 out of a possible 20 return points.

In the second set, there was a fair bit of resistance from Bara, the World No. 136. But Marincova who has ascended to a career-high ranking of No. 51, recovered from a mini wobble to break serve in quick succession towards the end of the set.

She is set to meet Muguruza for the first time.

Muguruza v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Muguruza is the heavy favorite, but this match could present a potential banana skin. This will be the Spaniard’s first indoor tournament in three years and taking Martincova to win a set here should be worth considering.
