Anna Karolina Schmiedlova v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

They met once at WTA 125K in Prague last year and Schmiedlova won that match in straight sets.

Schmiedlova Rebounds to Beat Juvan

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova fought back from a set down to eliminate Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan in the first round on Monday.

In a match that swung from one end to the other, Schmiedlova lost the first set despite taking a 3-0 lead upfront. She, however, dominated the second, dropping just four points on her serve and 12 in total to take the set 6-1 and force the decider.

In the third, it was Juvan who got the first break as she went up 1-3. But Schmiedlova responded with an immediate break and went on to win the next three games as well. The Slovak eventually closed out the two-hour-and-23-minute contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The win ended Schmiedlova’s four match losing streak, which began with a second round defeat to Anasatasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round of the U.S. Open. She then bowed out of the first round of the WTA 125 in Karlsruhe and it was followed by first-round exits from Luxembourg and Indian Wells.

Overall the three-time WTA winner is 35-21 this season from all levels, which includes a WTA 125 title on clay in Belgrade.

Cristian Upsets the Second Seed

Facing Schmiedlova will be Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian who stunned the second seed and World No. 33 Tamara Zidansek in the first round on Monday.

Cristian got a break in the fourth game of the first set, but Zidansek pulled it back in the seventh. The Romanian would however seal the set with another break in the 12th game of the set.

After holding serves in the initial exchanges of the second set, they traded breaks in the middle, but it was the Slovenian who got the vital break in the ninth game to go 4-5 up and then held on to her serve in the next game to force the decider.

Cristian upped her level in the third and dominated the proceedings, racing to a 5-0 lead. She had two match points in the next game, but somehow Zidansek stayed in the contest. Not for long though as Cristian held serve in the next for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win in two hours and nine minutes.

Cristian had qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over Germany’s Mona Barthel and the Netherlands’ Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the qualifying rounds.

The 23-year-old Romanian was a semifinalist at the Astana Open recently falling to Alison Van Uytvanck in the final four stage. She also reached the semifinal in Karlsruhe, and was a quarterfinalist in St. Petersburg earlier this year.
