Can Garin Prosper Away From Clay?

Like Davidovich-Fokina, Garin is much better known as a clay court player. He won his fifth senior title on home soil in Chile in March, and went on to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters and then the fourth round of the French Open.

That he then got to the same stage in Wimbledon was something of an outlier.

The 25-year old has played comparatively little tennis since then, and has failed to progress beyond the third round of any tournament he has entered.

He was last in action at Indian Wells where he was seeded 13 and entered the competition at the second round stage. He beat the American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo, but then was well beaten by the Australian Alex de Minaur.

Garin was given a first round bye in Antwerp.

Davidovich-Fokina Triumphs Over Australian

The Spaniard with Russian parents is better known for his performances on clay.

He won his solitary senior title in doubles at the Chile Open last year partnered by compatriot Roberto Carballes-Baena, and achieved by far his best result in a Grand Slam to date by reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open in June.

Since then, results have been more mixed, although he did get to the third round of the Olympics before losing to Novak Djokovic.

He was handed a tough-looking assignment on paper in the first round in the shape of Jordan Thompson, the Australian,  but he dealt with the challenge of the world number 72, with comparative ease.

After the first four games of the match went with serve, the Spaniard drew first blood with a break, only for Thompson to level straight away. However, Davidovich-Fokina broke again and then once more, to claim the set.

The second set became a service battle, until Thompson offered the Spaniard a break point which he took.

Serving for the match, Davidovich-Fokina had a match point saved, and then had to save a  break point himself. But when a second match point presented itself, he made no mistake this time.

Garin v Davidovich-Fokina Prediction and Tip

Although Garin is the seed and the higher ranked player, Davidovich-Fokina is the favourite to win this match. Both are happier on clay, but the Spaniard has the better recent form on hard courts and began his campaign in Antwerp well.

Tip: Fokina to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
