Donna Vekic v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Begu has won on each occasion. The Romanian won in Toshkent in 2012, and in  Moscow two years later. Their most recent meeting was on clay in Istanbul three years ago.

Vekic Gets Morale-Boosting Win

2021has largely been a year to forget for Vekic, who two years ago was a top twenty player and began the season ranked 32nd in the world. So bad has her form been that she may end the year outside the top 100.

The Croat had not won a match on the main tour for two months prior to this event, where, having once been guaranteed a seeding, she was made to qualify instead.

Her victory over the American number eight seed, Alison Riske, in the first round was morale boosting to say the least.

Vekic began on the front foot, breaking Riske in her opening service game. She then consolidated her lead with another break, taking the first set with comparative ease.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but then Riske was broken again, and there was no way back for the American. The Croatian was able to wrap up the win with no further alarms.

Cleveland Finalist Begu

Begu reached her first final in four years in Cleveland in August, losing eventually to Anett Kontaveit.

That has been the high point of her season, together with an appearance in the semi-finals of the doubles at the French Open at Roland Garros.

However, a good crop of points from the remaining events of this year should set her up well as she prepares for 2022.

She began her Tenerife campaign with a good victory over the Ukrainian teenager, Marta Kostyuk, ranked three places higher than her in the world currently.

Begu seized the advantage by breaking Kostyuk in the opening game, and, although the teenager hit back to level, she promptly dropped her serve once more.

The Romanian had to save break points herself thereafter, but finally was able to close out the set.

Vekic v Begu Prediction and Tip

The weight of history is on the side of Begu, having won all their previous matches, And, given Vekic’s recent form struggles, the odds would appear to favour the Romanian.
