Halep Holds Off Potapova

Simona Halep kicked off her Kremlin Cup campaign in style, as she defeated Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in straight sets on Tuesday.

The Romanian, who got broken in the first set once, dominated the proceedings, breaking Potapova thrice to take the first set.

She was given a tough fight in the second set though, with both players breaking each other twice in the first six games, but eventually it was the experienced Halep who had the last laugh, breaking Potapova one more time in the set and then holding off the spirited Russian in the final game of the match by saving three break points and finally converting a second match point to wrap up the contest 6-1, 6-4 .

With the win, the two-time Grand Slam champion improved to 17-8 for the season.

A semifinalist in Stuttgart and quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and the Gippsland Trophy, Halep will be eager to reach a fourth quarterfinal of the year as she looks to salvage something out of a season marred by injuries and poor form.

Kudermetova Ralies Past Selekhmeteva

World No. 32 Veronica Kudermetova of Russia began her challenge with a come-from-behind win over compatriot Oksana Selekhmeteva.

Kudermetova started the match by breaking her opponent’s serve but couldn’t hold on to the lead, as Selekhmeteva won four games in a row to close out the first set 4-6.

Both players held on to their serves in the first 12 games of the second, but it was Kudermetova who dominated the tiebreak sending the match to the deciding set. There was more drama in the third as Kudermetova raced to a 5-1 lead, breaking her opponent three times, while getting broken once. But the qualifier refused to give in getting back both the breaks and sending the match back on serve at 4-5. But she couldn’t draw level as Kudermetova broke again to take the contest 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

The 24-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist in Moscow in 2019, improved to 32-22 for the season. She has not been in best of forms lately, coming into the tournament with a 5-7 record since the Olympics but will be hoping to reach another quarterfinal in Moscow.
