Despite starting as the heavy favourite in the first round of the WTA Tenerife against the 72nd ranked Heather Watson, Clara Tauson had to fight hard for the win.
The match lasted for a little over two and a half hours and saw Tauson win the match with 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6). It was quite impressive to see the 18-year-old keep her calm in the final set tiebreak, to say the least. Even though Watson was the superior player in terms of service game and breakpoints, Tauson won the key points that got her through.
Now she faces a player who has been playing professional tennis for the last 15 years.
For what it is worth, the youngster from Denmark has got momentum and confidence on her side. This year, the current World No. 48 – her best singles ranking yet – won two singles titles on the WTA Tour in the Lyon Open and Luxembourg Open.
In addition to this, Tauson was also the champion at the WTA 125K event in Chicago and a couple of ITF tournaments earlier in the season. On the whole, her win-loss tally is 37-13 and owing to this, she has moved up some 100 odd places in the singles ranking.

Zhang Snaps her Losing Streak
Shuai Zhang started her campaign in the tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Rebeka Masarova. The 32-year-old Chinese is playing under the protected ranking norm and looks to end the season on a positive note.
She arrived in Spain on the back of a four-match losing streak spanning across Luxembourg, Ostrava, Chicago, and Indian Wells. Barring a semifinal run in the Palermo Open and a runner-up feat at the Nottingham Open, Zhang has had a largely mediocre year with a litany of early-round exits.
However, the doubles veteran is still highly experienced and capable, having won the Cincinnati Open, US Open, and Ostrava Open. She is ranked No. 8 there and will hope to translate some of that impulse into positive results on the singles circuit.
Tauson v Zhang Prediction and Tip
Expect an entertaining match of tennis that can very well go either way, but a three-setter is certainly on the cards. Tauson looks primed to continue her great year but following that hiccup in the opener, she should be prepared for a similar battle against the mighty Zhang.
