Alize Cornet v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head

While both are seasoned hands on the women’s circuit, Cornet and Schmiedlova have never featured in a head-to-head clash before. However, both players picked up impressive wins in their previous rounds and are guaranteed to produce sumptuous tennis in their first-ever head-to-head outing on Friday.

Cornet High On Confidence Going Into QF Clash

After suffering the ignominy of a first-round loss to Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic, Cornet fared only marginally better at her next event, the Indian Wells Masters.

After opening her campaign with a fighting win over Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse, the 66th-ranked Frenchwoman received a tennis masterclass from this year’s surprise US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez.

The Canadian thumped Cornet in straight sets to send her crashing out of the tournament. Coming into the Tenerife Ladies Open, the 31-year-old Frenchwoman took some of the hurt from her Indian Wells defeat out on Stefanie Vogele as she trounced her Swiss opponent 6-1, 6-2 to move into the second round.

With one set apiece and Cornet leading 4-1 in the decider, the Frenchwoman received a walkover into the quarter-finals after her opponent, Wang Xinyu of China, pulled out with an injury.

However, between the Frenchwoman and a place in the semifinal stands seasoned Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Like Cornet, the Slovakian also showed nerves of steel and dogged determination to reach the last-eight and will be no pushover for the experienced Frenchwoman as she bids for her maiden Tour title.

Schmiedlova On Winning Run

After suffering back-to-back first-round losses at the Luxembourg Open and the Indian Wells Masters, Schmiedlova opened her Tenerife campaign with a labored win over Slovenian Kaja Juvan.

Fighting back after losing the opening set 4-6, Schmiedlova bagged the next two 6-1, 6-4 to get over the line fairly comfortably. The win saw her set up a second-round clash with Romanian Jacqueline Cristian.

Currently ranked 90th in singles, the Slovakian survived a few anxious moments against the Romanian to close a win in straight sets.

However, the battle for the last four is likely to be a tougher challenge for the Slovakian as she faces experienced Frenchwoman Cornet in the quarter-finals.

With neither Cornet nor Schmiedlova playing each other before, there will be no obvious favorite going into this clash on Friday.

Cornet v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

While Cornet will hold a slight edge on account of her superior ranking, Schmiedlova will believe that she has the form and momentum to spring an upset on the Frenchwoman on Friday.
